Welcome to the walkers' paradise of Brandenburg! Ancient castles, rolling hills, flowering meadows and deep forests characterise the High Fläming Nature Park. Some people call the High Fläming the "smallest uplands in Germany". The Nature Park is home to the 200-metre Hagelberg mountain, marking one of the highest points in the North German Plain. Fläming is an area rich in stone and legend, with different stones named after goblins ("Koboldstein"), angels ("Engelsstein"), giants ("Riesenstein") and ravens ("Rabenstein"). Legend has it that the mediaeval castles were built by giants. The late Romanesque fieldstone churches are also typical of the Fläming region. They were built with countless boulders and rubblestone "imported" from Scandinavia in the ice age. There is a good network of cycle paths and hiking trails in the Nature Park. The 147-kilometre "Burgenwanderweg" trail takes in all four Fläming castles and has been certified as a quality trail. The "Kunstwanderweg" art trail between Bad Belzig and Wiesenburg has surprising discoveries in store by the wayside. The Nature Park Centre has information on sections of the walks which are accessible with wheelchairs and buggies. The Nature Park "Reitroute" is a horse-riding trail combining nature, culture and culinary treats. The European Bicycle Route R1 from Calais on the French coast to Saint Petersburg runs through the Nature Park. Day trips are no problem as the area is also well served by railway stations (Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Bad Belzig, Brück, Beelitz-Heilstätten). The Fläming region is also named after the settlers from Flanders – the Flemings – who made their home here in the 12th century. Visitors can pick up information about everything on offer in the Nature Park in the Nature Park Centre in Raben. Highlights for tourists include the annual Nature Park "Wanderfest" walking festival (end of April/beginning of May), the "Apfelfest" apple festival (September) and the Christmas market "with a difference" (first weekend in the Advent season).
